John Lewis in Reading, UK, is one of the anchor stores in the town’s bustling shopping district. Originally opened in 1983, the store has undergone several refurbishments and upgrades over the years to keep up with changing retail trends. As the incumbent digital surveyors for John Lewis, we were tasked with conducting a comprehensive 3D survey of the store to assist with their ongoing refurbishment and upgrade projects.

Our work with John Lewis has been instrumental in helping them to achieve their vision of a fully realized digital twin of their entire store portfolio. The data we have collected through our surveys has allowed John Lewis to visualize and test their designs before any physical work is carried out, reducing costs and ensuring that their vision is fully realized.
3D Laser Scanning and Point Cloud Modelling
To begin the survey process, we conducted a full 3D laser scan of the interior and exterior of the store. This scan allowed us to capture accurate measurements and details, enabling us to create a highly detailed point cloud model of the entire building.
Creating a BIM-Ready Survey
Using the data collected from the scans, we created a BIM-ready survey of the store that was ready for use by John Lewis’s design team. The survey was developed to LOD300, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the model. We worked closely with John Lewis to convert the fixtures, fittings, and equipment into BIM and create a separate model for each level of the store. The completed survey provided John Lewis with a detailed BIM-Ready Survey of the store that allowed them to visualize and test their designs before any physical work was carried out. This helped to reduce costs and ensure that John Lewis’s vision was fully realized.
